The Geo Magnetic Solar Climate Model (GMSC)

Much excellent work on themes such as the relationship between space weather and our climate, geological activity and geomagnetism, but scholars that are examining these and other isolated relationships, have not yet fully explored the creation of a planetary model that combines the numerous individual relationships to view a larger interconnected system.

Without such an understanding, we are left with an inadequate analysis for prediction and a less than complete model for analysis and comparison of other planets.

This collaborative research project seeks to remedy this gap by creating a data-intensive analytical platform to search for and examine the correlations between a number of variables and proxies representing Earth’s magnetism, geological activity, climate and space weather over the last few decades. In addition to seeking out correlations, the primary collaborative research goal is likely to sit in the area of space physics, to provide a scientific rationale for these relationships.

The participation is requested from each of the aforementioned disciplines in order to support the development of the research in this area.  This data platform is cross-cutting and explores relationships between disciplines. The scientific yields that are possible from the outputs utilising this data platform are expected to be groundbreaking.

Through a close and fine-grained analysis of these relationships, we will produce a holistic model, built for the purposes of prediction on Earth as well as providing a baseline for the analysis of other planets.

It is foreseen that the predictive possibilities of the model will not only have a scientific application but also applications in disaster management, mitigation and insurance, saving lives as well as wider commercial applications.

The requirements for this research project are not only science-based but also that of high-performance computer skills and infrastructure. Local organisations and science programmes have expressed their willingness to assist in the development of the necessary systems to address the data-intensive requirements such as algorithms development, machine learning programming, visualisation and storage of data.

This project also allows for the development of an associated human capital development programme which would include student projects at the undergraduate and masters levels, science engagement at a schools level as well as public outreach activities. Science communication is an essential part of engaging a variety of communities and embedding the importance of science and technology development for growth.
